Make Your Own Seed Mats for Super Fast Gardening

Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just getting started, sometimes the hardest part is that first shovel-full of dirt at the beginning of the growing season. Getting outside and preparing the soil for the next planting can feel like one part you'd rather just skip and go straight to looking out at all those seedlings busting up through the dirt.
Chris Chapman designed roll-out vegetable mats, each designed for different growing seasons. The mat is made from corrugated cardboard with embedded seed pouches and fertilizers. The idea is that as the cardboard breaks down, the seeds are able to germinate and take root; meanwhile, you put in the least work possible.
While it's a bit late in the year to try this for fall veggies, it's the perfect time to prepare your own garden roll now so that this coming spring, sewing seeds is a snap. These roll-out mats are common for flower gardens, and there's no reason why you can't create your perfect organic herb and vegetable garden ahead of time in the same way.
Creating Your Own Roll-Out Garden Mat
Step 1 - Decide what vegetables and herbs you'd like to grow during spring, summer and fall. This way you can have your mats at the ready each time you need to sew seeds for that growing period. The best choices for what to grow is whatever you eat most during the year. If you've saved seeds from last year's garden, you won't even need to hit the garden shop before getting started!
Step 2 - Check on germination rates and companion gardening suggestions. This will help you figure out which seeds should go together in which mats. For instance, lettuces or radishes have very short growing times, whereas broccoli or tomatoes have much longer stretches of time before they can be harvested. Additionally, there's the size factor. It's not a good idea to put lettuce seeds on the same mat as tomato seeds, since the growing tomato plants will steal all the sun from lettuce seedlings. Finally, check into companion gardening. This is when you put plants together that have complimentary needs. Often companion gardening can eliminate the need for any organic fertilizers and natural pesticides you might otherwise need to use. Getting this information together and planning out your mats with these things in mind will maximize the ease of care and yield of your garden.
Step 3 - Create your mats. This can be done in a few ways. While Chapman's design is clever, putting seeds in pouches doesn't work since each seed needs to be spaced out. There are simple ways to make your own seed mats that will remedy this. For instance, you can gather up a roll of heavy duty brown paper towels, flour, and your seeds. Make a thick paste with flour and water, and spread it over the unrolled paper towel torn to whatever length you'd like. Then place the seeds in the paste at the distance recommended on the seed pouches. Let the towel dry completely, roll it up, label it, and stash it until it's time to use it in your garden.
Step 4 - Grow your garden. When it comes time to grow the seed mat you've created, simply loosen a sunny patch of soil in your yard, unroll your mat, cover it with compost to the depth appropriate for whichever seeds you're planting, water, and voila! You're done planting your garden in minutes.
A successful garden will still require quite a bit of care, but planting sure couldn't be much easier or carefree than this! A little late fall and winter preparation will save you tons of time during the rush of growing season.

You and your kids will enjoy doing this project together. Creating seed tape — or seed mats — enables you to plant seeds right where you want them, so you waste fewer seeds and don't have to spend a lot of time thinning out young plants later. It's an especially handy way of planting tiny seeds that are hard to sow one at a time. Plus, it's also good for seeding an "arrangement" in a container garden.

Mark Seed Spacing

Consult the packet of seeds to find out how far apart the seeds should be planted. Using a marker, put a mark at each spot on the towel where a seed will go.

Remember this term " One person's junk is another person's treasure". This is very true. You would not believe that what you think is junk, another person will pay good money for.
Start with Goodwill and thrift stores. Then go to  several yard sales in search of other people's junk. You  could make money from. Examples would be,  old radios, portable TV's, toys, vintage antics, figurines, etc, all which only cost a few dollars each.

If you have a smart phone. Use your smart phone to do your re-search. Download the free Ebay app. For example; When I go to Goodwill. I will look for antic, vintage, figurines. Then I look for key identifying marks or names on these items.I do a search on Ebay to see what they are selling for.
My biggest find at Goodwill was this Mouse Cottage.

What to Look for at Goodwill, Thrift Shops and Garge Sales.

1. • Toys/action figures, vintage: check condition carefully. Year is often on foot of older action figures. Old action figures sell really good. 
   • Sports memorabilia - pins, key chains, mugs, odd housewares, etc.
   • Patterns: vintage, dolls and toys, odd designs
   • Sterling silver flatware  Even if you can only afford to buy a spoon or a fork at a time, sterling silver is known to have antimicrobial properties. Some people believe that simply using silver flatware as everyday eating utensils can ward off harmful microbes.  Typically, a single piece of silver, such as a spoon, will run about $50.  Buy from reputable sellers, such as established estate sale agents and thrift stores.
   • Good quality knives  Look for brand names such as K-Bar,  Cold Steel, and Gerber and know how to spot quality.  A Swiss Army Knife is also a good find.
   • Homeschooling supplies  In a crisis, you may end up being your children’s teacher.  Workbooks, classic literature, flash cards, math manipulative s, textbooks, and even school supplies are very often for sale by homeschoolers who are moving up a grade or have decided to liquidate their stockpile of school supplies.
   • Winter wear  I once picked up a super heavy duty men’s winter coat for ten dollars.  I was thrilled because it looks like it’s never been worn and came in a dry cleaner’s bag.  Look for snow boots, winter gloves, and other pieces of winter wear, and if you have kids, buy this clothing in a size or two larger for future winters.
   • Boots  Work boots, riding boots, gardening boots, mucking boots, military boots, motorcycle boots, cowboy boots, hiking boots, desert boots — who knew there were so many different kinds of boots?  Check for quality construction and material as well as wear and tear.  When it comes to taking care of your feet, always go for quality.
   • Tools  There’s just something about old tools from the 40′s and 50′s that beats the heck out of today’s “Made in China” label.  Some sellers are savvy to the higher quality of their tools and may ask a bit more, but in the long run, it will be worth it.
   • Fishing equipment I’ve seen top-quality fishing poles, nets, enormous collections of flies, rods, reels, you name it.  If part of your survival plan is to go fishing for food, estate and yard sales are prime sources for supplies.
   • Emergency supplies  I’ve picked up emergency radios, lanterns, backpacks, water purification tablets, and paracord.  Most of what I have in my Vehicle Emergency Kit was found at these sales.  By the way, here’s a tip: often the best survival related supplies will be found out in the garage, if you’re attending an estate sale.
   • Tough kids clothing  Believe it or not, when my son was quite young, I discovered that Gymboree made the toughest jeans on the market.  I don’t believe he ever wore a hole through the knees of his Gymboree jeans.  Kids are notoriously tough on clothes, so when you’re looking at second hand clothing, go for brands and fabrics that will stand up to serious wear and tear.  Buy them in larger sizes, so you’ll be ready for growth spurts.
   • Manual kitchen and household tools  Do you have a manual egg beater?  A flour sifter?  Enough manual can openers?  A manual meat grinder?  I’ve seen all of these and more at estate and yard sales.  During a long-term power outage, you’ll be glad to have them!
   • Cast iron cookware Guess where I picked up my two best cast iron skillets?  Yep, at garage sales!
   • Cookbooks  Specifically look for cookbooks that provide recipes for outdoor cooking, canning, Dutch oven cooking, and cooking with basic ingredients.
   • Good quality gardening tools and supplies Often, in urban and suburban settings, gardening is a fad that comes and goes.  You will likely find everything you need for your garden just by shopping yard sales and Goodwill.
   • First aid and medical supplies Boxes of surgical gloves, bandages, butterfly strips, surgical scissors, sterile gauze and entire well-equipped first aid kits are sold at bargain prices.  Once I even saw an old Army first aid kit with a snake-bite kit and ammonia inhalants, circa 1955!  I prefer estate sales, and very often, the owner of the home was taken care of by a visiting nurse service.  I’ve found massive amounts of medical supplies in just these types of sales.  Don’t worry, I didn’t buy everything!  I left some for you!
   • Hunting supplies and firearms  In some yard/garage sales, you just might get lucky and spot hunting rifles and even handguns for sale.  If you see lots of hunting related items, quietly ask the homeowner if he/she also has firearms for sale.  There are plenty of other hunting supplies out there, though, including gun cleaning kits and decoys.  If you hit the right yard sale, you might feel like you’re in Cabela’s!

What NOT to buy at Goodwill:

• Sweatpants. This makes me violently sad. The two pairs that I’ve bought have had bad elastic in them. The same goes for yoga pants. Miss miss miss.
• Adult athletic shoes. Unless they look almost new. Sometimes smells that aren’t present at purchase can spring up after you warm those suckers up. Also, the shoes are going to be broken in to the person’s foot who originally owned them. I think. In my mind, I think that makes a difference.
• Electronic toys. I said buy toddler toys. Yes. Do. But be leery of electronic toys that you can’t test in the store. You win some, you lose some. I’ve mostly lost.
• Carseats and cribs. Most of the big chains will no longer carry these items because of recalls and safety issues.
• Furniture: It’s really hit and miss. I’ve found WAY better deals on furniture on Craigslist. But if you’re willing to pay extra to not get strangled, go for it. I, personally, like the thrill of not knowing whether I’m going to end up with a snazzy dresser or in a ditch.

1. Take stock of your inventory! Go through your house, basement, and garage and make a list of items you could sell.  Gather smaller items into a pile in part of your house or garage.  Think beyond just clothes – look at tools, small appliances, sporting equipment, books, craft supplies, kids toys, etc.  At the same time you are doing a selling inventory, collect items that don’t have much re-sell value but that you could donate to a local shelter or thrift store.  You can de-clutter, help a good cause, and get a tax write-off for these.  If I think an item will sell for under $20, I usually just donate it to the local women’s shelter.
2. Set-up your Ebay and PayPal accounts. Many of you might already have these.  They are very easy to set-up by visiting Ebay.com and PayPal.com.  You may also want to create a basic Craiglist account for bigger items that may be hard to ship.
3. Take great pictures! The better the picture (and the description for that matter), the better the selling price.  It’s as simple as that.  If you don’t have a digital camera borrow one from a friend. Pictures are what sell the product. A bad picture can cause an item not to sell.
4. Estimate shipping costs or Free Shipping'. At this point get an accurate estimate on shipping costs.  You can check shipping prices online at www.usps.com or www.ups.com.  This step is often overlooked, but is important to know so you don’t lose money on shipping the item. Many Ebay shoppers look for Free Shipping.
5. Check ‘Completed Listings’. Next check to see what comparable items sell for (you can search for an item and then click on “completed listings” on the left hand side for items that have ended).  This will help you to determine a starting price and/or expected market value for your item.
6. Create your listing! There are many ‘advanced’ techniques, but I like to keep it simple.  I list all of my items on Sunday’s for 7 days (so they end on Sunday and not mid-day on a workday).  I skip the extra ‘upsells’ like bold or premium listing to minimize my cost associated with listing the item.
7. Check your messages at least once a day. Sometimes you’ll get messages from potential buyers.  They might want to clarify something or have a question about shipping and bidding procedures.  More bidders means higher end prices for you.
8. After the sale, ship the items promptly and leave feedback for the buyer. Be sure to help avoid negative feedback (and honor the buyer’s purchase) by shipping the items quickly after the buyer has paid in full.  Normally the quicker you can ship, the more likely they will leave you a raving review!

   The term wholesale drop ship is not new. It didn't just pop up with the internet. Wholesale drop ship suppliers have been around for well over a hundred years, and in some form or fashion even for thousands of years. Drop shipping is where you don't have minimum order requirements and have to purchase in quantities, stock and ship the products. 
2. The Wholesale Suppliers Role in a Dropshipping Arrangement
   The concept that a wholesale company will send products directly to a customer location from their warehouse, bypassing the retailer, allows the retailer to avoid handling products. That's a good thing. You, as the retailer, don't have to spend time and money to re-package wholesale products and get them out to your customers. Your customer gets the package faster, and that makes THEM happy.
   
   The wholesale drop ship supplier has some extra work to do in this scenario, They have to break open large cartons of products, pick ONE product out for you, and package and ship it to YOUR customer for you.

So the real advantage of using a wholesale drop ship supplier is in getting started at a low cost, and TESTING different products without a lot of expense.
     
4. Your Business Grows
   Once you find products from a wholesale drop ship supplier that works for you, it's time to start buying in bulk, and shipping them yourself. You get better prices from the supplier that way, and your retail price can come down, or you can leave it the same to increase your profit margin. But you get more flexibility in your retail prices.

How to Choose Your Blog’s Topic

The obvious place to start with your blogging topic is the things that you are passionate about. If you aren’t interested in something but choose the topic because you think it meets the other criteria, you’re either going to stop writing or simply create a bad, dispassionate blog. Either way, it’s not worth choosing a topic just because it’s “easy”.
Once you’ve narrowed the field a bit to things you can actually write about, you need to look for a topic that appears to be decidedly under-served. An area where there is a group of people who either don’t have a blog (or at least not a good one) that caters to a particular interest they have.
The easiest way to do this, when starting out, is to target a niche within a niche, within a niche.
What this means is that, when picking your topic, you first look at a broad area of interest, then choose a subsection of that interest, and then choose yet another subset of that particular interest. This way, you’ve started with an area of very broad interest and drilled down until you have a tiny section of it that, while still having an audience, is likely greatly under-served.
A quick example of this works as follows:

1. Start with a Broad, Already-Popular Product: Apple products
2. Choose a Segment of that Topic: Apple Mobile Products (iPhone, iPad, etc.)
3. Choose Yet Another Segment of That: Apple Mobile Products for Students (College, High School, etc.)

What you have then is a blog about Apple’s mobile products aimed at college students. It could cover, at least in theory, apps for academia, how new features may help students with the academic/social life and rumors about Apple deals aimed at college students.
All in all, if you use that formula, you’ll usually stumble upon topic ideas that others have not tried, or at least not tried well. After several searches on the above topic, I was not able to easily locate an entire blog aimed at this market, just many static resources and individual blog posts.
The idea is that A) The topic has an audience, albeit not a huge one or an aware one and B) Once you become established in it, that you can use your reputation within this niche to expand, slowly, into the higher ones, eventually talking more about mobile Apple products in general and then Apple products at large.
However, the work isn’t quite done at this point. Now you have to make sure that there’s enough to write about and that you’re interested enough to keep writing on the topic. The best way to do that is to simply write. Try to get at least a month’s worth of posts done before taking the blog live, both to make sure there’s enough interest on your part and to ensure that there’s enough of interest to keep the blog active and interesting.
Once you do that, you most likely have a good topic that you can start your blog with and one you can grow on as well, setting the stage at least for a very successful blog.

How to Choose What to Blog About

Figuring out what to blog about can be easy or hard: A blog is well suited to sharing information, documenting your life, exploring a hobby, or expressing your passion for a subject. The key is choosing just what to talk about on your blog.
Think about these things when you start a blog:

• Your Passion. What do you love doing, what makes you come alive
• Your natural talent and ability.  What are you good at? etc... Sports, arts, writing.
• Monetizable – has profit potential
  
  
  Choose a subject that genuinely interests you. Don’t choose a topic that you think looks good to be interested in or will attract a lot a readers. You’re the one who will have to do the writing for the blog, and it really helps if you’re enthusiastic about your subject. That passion will shine through to your readers and keep them coming back.

• Decide whether any topics are off limits. Bloggers who keep personal diaries for their friends and families might decide to keep certain subjects out of the public forum of the Internet. For example, do you really want your boyfriend reading a frank account of last night’s make-out session? How about your mom or your boss?
• Think about your potential readers. Who are they? How can you appeal to them and get them to keep reading your blog? Do you even care about how many readers you have? If you do, what do you have to show or teach or ask them?

For most bloggers, being successful is defined as attracting, keeping, and growing an audience of interested readers. . . preferably an audience that leaves comments and interacts with you and with other readers.

The key here is to find a niche and exploit it fully. Picking a niche and sticking with it can be tough to do. Fortunately, you get a lot of leeway in how you handle a subject, in evolving your own style, and in what you blog about.

Some subject areas have proven to be popular and successful blog subjects already. You can take on the competition and start a blog about

• Your kids: Baby books might have gone out of style, but that doesn’t mean you can’t document your child’s growth in detail on a blog. Mommyblogging, as it has come to be called, is on the rise in a big way.
